Creating Captions
Learn how captions are created and accessed in Scriptix.
How Captions are Generated
Captions in Scriptix are automatically generated from your uploaded audio or video files during the transcription process. When you upload media to a session, Scriptix:
- Transcribes the audio to text
- Generates time-synchronized caption segments
- Creates caption documents that can be edited and exported
Accessing the Caption Editor
From Your Workspace
- Navigate to your Workspace
- Find the session containing your captions
- Click on the caption document to open
- Caption Editor opens automatically
The caption editor is the interface where you edit caption text, adjust timing, and export in various formats.
What You Can Do in the Caption Editor
Once the caption editor opens, you can:
Edit Content:
- Edit caption text directly in each segment
- Fix transcription errors
- Improve readability
- Add or remove text
Adjust Timing:
- Modify start and stop times for each segment
- Use timing shift control for bulk adjustments
- Ensure captions sync with speech
Search & Navigate:
- Search for specific text across all segments
- Filter segments by search query
- Jump to specific segments
Export:
- Download captions in multiple formats (SRT, VTT, SBV, TTML, STL, HTML)
- Include or exclude speakers
- Include or exclude timestamps (where applicable)
Share:
- Generate magic links for sharing
- Send via email to collaborators
- Finalize documents before sharing
Translate:
- Create translated versions
- Export in multiple languages
Caption Document Structure
Each caption document contains:
Segments:
- Individual caption entries with start/stop times
- Text content for each segment
- Speaker information (if applicable)
Timing Information:
- Start time (HH:MM:SS.mmm format)
- Stop time (HH:MM:SS.mmm format)
- Duration (automatically calculated)
Metadata:
- Session information
- Language
- Creation date
- Filename
Caption Editing Workflow
Typical workflow for caption editing:
- Open caption editor from your workspace session
- Review the auto-generated caption segments
- Edit text to fix any transcription errors
- Adjust timing if captions don't sync with speech
- Use search to find and fix specific issues
- Export in your desired format (SRT, VTT, etc.)
Auto-Save
The caption editor includes auto-save functionality:
- Saves every 2 minutes automatically
- Saves to localStorage as backup
- Syncs to server for permanent storage
- Undo/redo preserved (20-level history)
- Save status shown in toolbar (synced, saving, saved-locally, unsaved)
Export Formats
Caption documents can be exported in industry-standard formats:
- SRT (SubRip) - Most widely compatible
- VTT (WebVTT) - HTML5 web video
- SBV - YouTube subtitle format
- TTML - Timed Text Markup Language
- STL - EBU broadcast standard
- HTML - Web-ready format
- Media - Original media file download

Best Practices
For Accurate Captions
Text Accuracy:
- Review auto-generated text carefully
- Fix transcription errors
- Use proper punctuation
- Maintain speaker identification
Timing Accuracy:
- Ensure captions start and end with speech
- Avoid captions that are too short or too long
- Use timing shift control for bulk adjustments
- Check synchronization with media playback
For Readability
Line Length:
- Keep captions concise
- Break at natural phrase boundaries
- Avoid overly long captions
Reading Speed:
- Allow enough time to read each caption
- Generally 1-7 seconds per caption
- Adjust timing if text appears too briefly

Fix Transcription Errors
- Locate segment with error (use search if needed)
- Click segment to edit
- Correct the text
- Auto-save will save your changes
Adjust Timing
- Click segment to edit
- Modify start or stop time in time input fields
- Or use Timing Shift Control for bulk adjustments
- Watch save status for confirmation
Search for Text
- Use search box in toolbar
- Type search query
- Segments filter to matches
- Click any match to edit
- Clear search to show all segments
Export Captions
- Click Export button in toolbar
- Choose format (SRT, VTT, SBV, TTML, STL, HTML)
- Configure options:
- Include/exclude speakers
- Include/exclude timestamps
- Click format to download
Share Captions
- Toggle document to Finalized status
- Click Magic Link button
- Copy link or send via email
- Recipients can access the caption document
Troubleshooting
Captions Don't Sync with Video
Problem: Caption timing doesn't match speech
Solutions:
- Use timing shift control to adjust all segments
- Manually adjust individual segment times
- Check if timecode offset is set correctly
Can't Edit Caption Text
Possible Causes:
- Document is finalized
- You don't have edit permissions
- Session has been deleted
Solutions:
- Toggle document back to "Editable" status
- Check your permissions with session owner
- Verify session still exists in workspace
Export Button Not Working
Possible Causes:
- Network issue
- Browser blocking download
- Document still processing
Solutions:
- Check internet connection
- Check browser download settings
- Refresh page and try again
